Village helps young people

Youth of Suvavou Village in Suva welcomed the new year with their annual volleyball tournament yesterday.

Tournament director Jone Tuilau said the aim was to bring youths from their 11 clans together to enjoy the holidays, unite them and motivate them to work hard this year.

“We have been hosting these tournaments for the past 29 years and the concept is to help keep them away from being involved in unwarranted activities,” Tuilau said.

“It is to bring our communities together and expose our sports talents.

Some of our youths had represented Fiji in volleyball after playing in our tournaments. We have players such as Alipate Mudunavosa, Qilu Elliot, Anthony Foster, to name a few.

“Now we have seen some upcoming players such as Metui Mudunavosa, Pauliasi Tuilau, Atunaisa Campbell and Olive Ratudradra.”

Tuilau said they hoped to form a volleyball association.

“Last year during Boxing Day, we hosted 56 teams and today (yesterday) we had another 18, so there is a lot of interest and a lot of talents.

“We have four grades. They are the sub junior, junior, senior men’s and women’s teams and we are grateful to Nadonumai Holdings for sponsoring our games.

The Hard Rock team won the 2021 Tui Suva Trophy.
